The New Archaeological Museum of Mytilene

Very close to the old Archaeological Museum, in Kioski area, is located the new building of the museum. The erection of the new museum completed in 1995. In March 1999, the permanent exhibition, Lesvos from Hellenistic to Roman Times, opened to the public focusing on the most important period of Ancient Lesvos, dating from the 4th century BC to 3rd century AD.

The purpose of the exhibition is to provide the visitors with a view of the daily, social, economic and religious life of the island that particular period. The exhibition halls are housed on two floors and include six rooms with the permanent exhibition and two other rooms for the temporary ones. The main exhibition is divided in three sections.

In the three halls of the first ground floor the visitors happen upon mosaic floors, friezes and finds from roman villas which were revealed by excavations on the hill of Agia-Kiriaki in the city of Mytilini. In the three subsequent rooms of the second ground floor, various sculptures have been placed (reliefs, portraits and statues) and in the halls of the temporary exhibitions the visitors can view finds related to Roman symposiums.
