The Municipal Art Gallery of Mithymna (Molyvos)

It's here

The Municipal Art Gallery of Mithymna was set up in August 1981. Artists and art collectors donated to the gallery 77 works of art. Yet, at the end of 1950s, during the period of the touristic and cultural development of Molyvos, there was the need for a place which could house the works of artists who were living in Molyvos. In 1981, the mayor, Kostas Doukas, the litterateur Nasos Theofilou, the artist Apostolos Giagiannou and the painter Chronis Botsoglou took the initiative to open the gallery.

The Gallery’s collection includes some old artworks like two projects of Giannoulis Halepas, but also many works of a new generation of artists who were active during 1960s and 1970s and whose art brought in contact the current   Greek reality with the rest Europe.

Later, most of these artists taught in the School of Fine Arts in Athens. Today, the impressive collection of the gallery keeps growing, including new works of modern artists. Thus, the visitors can view modern installations, constructions and conceptual projects.

If you are interested in a guided tour in the gallery you have to contact with Katerina Rouchota (+30 694 7174563) or Niki Moutzourelli (+30 698 3611849). Both of them support voluntarily the students’s visits helping the teachers to inform the students about the history of the building and the art collection.
