It's here

The castle of Mytilini is located on the north part of the city, among a verdant pine forest and the sea. It is maintained in good condition and it’s one of the biggest  castles in the Mediterranean area.

It was probably erected in the Byzantine era, during the time of Justinian I and it was renovated by Francesco Gattilusio when his family (a Genoese family) took the control of the island. It is said that this period the castle of Mytilini was one of the most massive and impregnable fortresses.

Today, the visitors can see the “Queen’s Tower”, which was the residence of Francesco Gattilusio. Also, in the castle there is a Roman or Byzantine Cistern which was built of waterproof fabric. The gates of the castle are decorated with the family coats of arms of the Gattilusi and the Palaiologoi. Also, there are underground passageways, where women and children were gathering during war time. Walk around  and enjoy the beautiful view to the sea. During  summer, the castle is used for various cultural events.
