The Ancient Theater of Mytilini

It's here

The Ancient Theater of Mytilini dates from the early Hellenistic years and nowadays it maintains its final construction characteristics.

The horseshoe- shaped concave “seeing place” has a 107m diameter and it’ s sunken in the shattered volcanic rock. It could held 10,000 spectators. It was covered with marble seats, none of which was found in its position. The orchestra is full circle with a 24m diameter and it was constructed from compacted soil over the formed rock. It is surrounded by a guardrail, built with dry stone.

The face of the wall is covered with marble slabs, fixed to mortar The whole construction was completed with inscribed marble slabs. In the west part of the orchestra there are two arched rooms, sunken in the rock of the concave. Probably, the stage building was formed by four spaces with corridors among them. Parts of ancient columns indicate that around the theater there were another buildings, platforms and altars. The most serious damage that happened is the soil erosion in the slope where the concave had been constructed. Because of the liquefaction of the external layer of the soil and the reduction of its thickness, the natural rock came out. Climatic changes and other factors have led to a gradual shattering of the rock.

Today, although the place has been much destroyed many theater and music events take place. The visitors strolling around the ruins can feel the aura of another era. The Ancient Theater is open during all the year and it has free entrance.
